The Lightyear start-up, which specializes in electric car development, made its debut with its first solar-powered vehicle, the sleek Lightyear 0 sedan.

The car is a non-traditional hybrid equipped with a conventional battery for electric cars with a capacity of 60 kWh and solar panels on the roof, hood and trunk. The solar panels on the Lightyear 0 automatically charge whenever the car is exposed to the sun. It doesn't matter if it is parked or in operation.

Lightyear 0 is not as solar self-sufficient as it is solar support. For the car to travel longer distances, it must reach into its battery reserve. The car's solar panels can provide a daily range of around 70 kilometres in sunny weather, while the range of the electric car is around 540 kilometres. However, Lightyear 0 could allow drivers with exceptionally short commutes or those who rarely need their car to drive essentially free of charge. Lightyear claims that the sun can provide the Lightyear 0 with an annual range of almost 6,000 to 11,000 kilometres.

Lightyear 0 owners will have to drive significantly longer to purchase a vehicle cost-effective. The price of Lightyear O is 250,000 euros and the company plans to produce only 946 pieces. However, a vehicle at a more reasonable price is on the way. Lightyear recently unveiled a prototype solar-powered car around 50,000 euros, which is scheduled to begin production by 2025.
