Autonomous tram

We can’t imagine the automotive industry as only cars, but also buses or trams. Today, we would like to look at the beginnings of autonomous trams with you.

While the autonomous cars are still in the experimental phase, the situation on railway tracks is one step further. For instance, the railway train on line 14 has been running without a driver in Paris since 1998. In addition to that, we can take automatic trains in many other countries such as Japan. And what about trams?

Several countries are among those testing the possibility of autonomous trams. As an example, we can mention the Polish tram, which passed a test drive in Krakow. It traveled over 3.4 km without a driver. Moreover, the Russian company PC Transport system and Cognitive Technologies are also working on developing a fully autonomous tram for the Russian and foreign markets. Their regular service is scheculed for the year 2021.

However, the world’s first autonomous tram was launched in Postdam (west of Berlin) in 2018. The vehicle was developed by a team of 50 computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and physicists of the German cengineering company Siemenst. It is equipped with several radars, a lidar (laser light), and camera sensors that crete digital eyes that film the tram and its surroundings during each journey. A tram can respond to a tracking signal and can respond to danger faster than a human so it allows the system to recognize people, cars, and other objects even during rain, fog, dazzling light or at night. The autonomous tram is considered an important milestone on the road to autonomous driving.

China, which has an interesting position in the development, introduced the first ART (Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit). It is a new type of transport that is something between train, bus, and tram. It does not run on rails, but on points and lines that are painted directly on the road. The second, much more important innovation is that the train has no driver, it runs alone and is computer controlled. The machine is also environmentally friendly because it runs on batteries. It can exist as a commuter train or regular public transport in the city.

Together with Yüce Yazılım, we can look forward to innovations in the automotive industry that are constantly evolving. Be with us to monitor such progress.
